Driscoll Responds to Most Recent Crash Along Route 28 Corridor in Milton

Updated: 29 minutes ago

JULY 7, 2025

“I was saddened to learn of another fatal crash on Route 28/Randolph Ave. in Milton.

Governor Baker's final act in office was to refuse to sign legislation that would have lowered the speed limit on Route 28 to 25 mph. The citizen generated home rule petition was passed by the Legislature and was later pocket vetoed by the Governor.

MassDot has studied and restudied this corridor twice in the last six years, with the most recent study having been released earlier this spring. They are focused on adding a roundabout but not the remaining downstream effects and additional projects needed along this stretch of roadway on Randolph Ave., that now sadly adds three more fatalities to its history.

Route 28 in Milton should be 25 mph and a single lane in each direction, especially the corridor between Reedsdale Rd. and Chickatawbut Rd. There should be turn lanes and traffic calming measures added along the corridor where side streets intersect. That change would allow for safer entering and exiting of traffic for residents living along and using side streets on this stretch of road.

Additionally, large portions of Route 28 in Milton already feature a single travel lane. The rest of 28 should also feature lower speed limits and single travel lanes in each direction for vehicles and protected multiuser lanes for biking and pedestrians.

My thoughts continue to be with the loved ones and friends of all those who have lost their lives along this corridor.“

Senator Driscoll has played a consistent role in calling attention to needing to develop and implement safety improvements to this corridor as both State Representative and now State Senator. Previously, when Governor Baker pocket vetoed the speed limit home rule petition in January 2023, Driscoll issued the following statement:

"Governor Baker mentioned frequently in speeches, perhaps hundreds of times, how he previously served in local government as a select board member and that it informed his perspective that local governments know their communities best. His last action as Governor was to refuse to sign, without explanation, a citizen generated home rule petition that would have improved safety on a stretch of state controlled road that desperately needs it. Local and state officials since at least 2018 have requested MassDOT to improve safety and speed conditions on this stretch of RT 28. Studies have been completed by MassDOT that support short term and long term safety and traffic mitigation changes to this stretch of road but the Baker Administration failed to make those improvements up to the final act."

As of now, Driscoll is awaiting the results of the crash investigation but will continue to push for the crucial safety improvements that are needed along Randolph Ave.
