House and Senate to Vote to Enact PROTECT Act

Co-Chairs of the Conference Committee tasked with reconciling the House and Senate versions of the PROTECT Act announced on Wednesday, July 29th that compromised legislation had been reached.

Ongoing actions by this federal government have been detrimental to the safety and security of many communities across the nation. ICE in particular continues to engage unlawfully, sowing terror in communities that has ultimately left families fearful of sending their children to school, seeking healthcare, or legal services'; and further have separated families, and cost the lives of several innocent people.

Making the PROTECT Act law will provide immigrants in the Commonwealth with some of the strongest protections in the nation. This is something to be proud of, an action that is aligned with the guiding principles of this nation – unlike what is being employed by the Trump Administration.

“For some time now, the federal government has been willfully disregarding court orders and constitutional rights; actions that are new and growing threats to our liberty, dignity, and democracy,” said Senator William J. Driscoll, Jr. (D-Milton). “What we are seeing now is contrary to the guiding principles of our nation. This PROTECT Act shows that here in Massachusetts we do not abide by or believe in these unlawful and dangerous tactics. Here, we choose to stand up for all residents – especially those most vulnerable.”

Once enacted by both the House and Senate, the bill will be presented to the Governor for her signature.
