Senator Bill Driscoll Jr. (D-Milton) recently uncovered $25 million – and counting – in preferential or exclusive funding intended for Gateway Municipalities provided to cities or towns that no longer meet the legal criteria to be considered a Gateway Municipality. In other instances, there are municipalities that qualify but have never been designated a Gateway. This is likely due to a lack of oversight that has persisted across multiple administrations relative to managing Gateway status and funding opportunities year-to-year. Also, MassINC, which markets itself as the authority on Gateway Municipalities, continues to use the same inaccurate list of Gateways, republished again and again. The list has been inaccurate since at least 2016, and data reveals possibly as early as 2010.
Thanks to WBZ NightSide with Dan Rea for the opportunity for the Senator to come on the show again – this time to talk in-depth about these inaccuracies.
Talking with Dan Rea and engaging with callers was a great chance to explore the topic more. From the conversations Driscoll has had, it is clear that the Gateway law needs to be reopened and updated to ensure the accuracy, accountability and fairness that the public deserves.
