MAY 27, 2026

In August 2024 the Legislature passed the HERO Act, the most comprehensive legislative package dedicated to our Commonwealth veterans in Massachusetts' history. This sweeping legislation increased and simplified benefits and opportunities, modernized services, and promotes inclusivity for Massachusetts veterans while reaffirming the Commonwealth’s commitment to recognizing and serving all service members and their families.

Passing the HERO Act meant that these were local options afforded to municipalities, allowing each city and town across Massachusetts to choose and vote in provisions from the legislation.

Senator Driscoll commends a recent action by Bridgewater Town Council to vote in the adoption of this work locally in their town. The adopted provisions will ultimately support their veterans by alleviating some financial pressures.

This effort in the Town of Bridgewater, MA notably ensures that tax exemption relief grows alongside the cost of living, and also doubles the exemption amount for certain veterans, up to $2,000.

These efforts showcase the collaborative work between local and state officials that bring this type of work to fruition, supporting veterans and their broader communities. Thank you to Scott Pitta, Bridgewater veteran and Chief of Staff for the Massachusetts Office of the Veteran Advocate, and all who played a part in this adoption. Another thank you to Robert Jerdan, U.S. Navy veteran and incoming State Commander of the Massachusetts American Legion for his continued advocacy to adopt these types of local options for veterans. Each of your service embody the very best of the nation.
