Senator Bill Driscoll Jr. (D-Milton) joined 150+ legislative colleagues in a letter to President Trump urging that he reverse course and continue critical food assistance that many families depend on.
Lawmakers are advocating for the use of available federal funds to continue SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) through the duration of the government shutdown.
As defined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service, SNAP provides food benefits to low-income families to supplement their grocery budget so they can afford the nutritious foods essential to health and well-being.
The letter is a coordinated effort of the Food System Caucus of which Senator Driscoll is a member. The caucus is bipartisan and bicameral, and therefore embodies a unified front against this action by the federal government. Solidarity and cooperation of this nature are integral to challenging harmful policies, such as the cancelling of SNAP funding.
Governor Healey has also called on President Trump to reverse the decision to end SNAP benefits during the shutdown.
"Without this reversal, SNAP benefits will not be available to anyone in November. Massachusetts has individuals, children and families that will absolutely be negatively impacted by any gap in funding for SNAP food assistance. We are calling on the President to restore funds immediately," said Senator Driscoll.
