Driscoll Secures Massachusetts Commitment to the MSA

MAY 27, 2025

During his first budget debate with the Senate, Senator Bill Driscoll Jr. (D-Milton) increased funding for the Massachusetts Service Alliance (MSA) by over $600,000, securing a total of $2 million for the nonprofit. Reckoning with federal-level budget cuts impacting numerous fields that rely on volunteers, this funding showcases Driscoll’s commitment to continued investment in and value of service-focused organizations.

Founded in 1991, the MSA cross-coordinates between Commonwealth nonprofits, schools, and agencies, building a strong service-based community. By offering funding, training, and volunteer and service-focused training and resources, the MSA plays a focal role in cultivating Massachusetts' volunteer base.

“In these uncertain times, we are very fortunate to be in a state that truly values service and the positive ripple effect it has on individuals, communities, and nonprofits across the Commonwealth,” said Beth McGuinness, CEO, Massachusetts Service Alliance. “We are grateful for Senator Driscoll’s steadfast commitment to MSA and the work we do to strengthen service and volunteerism in our great state. The Senator’s career in public service was shaped in part by his time serving in AmeriCorps so he truly understands how critical this funding is along with the strong return on investment communities receive with the support of our Legislature.”

Driscoll’s action to increase MSA’s state funding makes a point that it is essential to protect the longevity of civic engagement in Massachusetts. Promoting continued growth of involvement in such work expands opportunity and innovation within environmental work, education, healthcare, and all other industries and fields that service alliances contribute to.

With a longstanding career focused on service, I see the impact volunteers make across local, state, and federal levels,” remarked Driscoll. “Investment in this base cultivates safer and more effective volunteers, workers, and communities. I am proud of my partnership with MSA, and am dedicated to all efforts possible to ensure they continue to serve these fields across the Commonwealth.”
